NG Road Racing - 2006 Race Reports

Pembrey - 18 and 19 March 2006 - Rounds 1 and 2

Well another cold meeting to start the NG Roadracing season at Pembrey.

On Saturday the sun shone but it was bitterly cold and Jed decided to go out on intermediates for the first qualifying session. And what a good choice it proved to be, as he won both the Open and Powerbike qualifiers putting him on pole for the finals. The finals were run in the afternoon and with no change to the weather Jed again went out on intermediates and got a third place in the Open and a second in the Powerbikes.

Sunday and it was back to qualifying for race two. Jed won the open and got second place in the powerbikes, putting him back on the front row for both finals. The first final was the Open and saw Jed take second place, and then he came third in a very close Powerbike race.

Everyone is very happy with these results, especially as Jed's engine is basically standard and is giving away between ten and twenty BHP to the competition. This will be addressed soon and should put Jed on a more even playing field.

Donington Park - 22 April 2006 - Round 3

Track Day

The next race with NG Roadracing took place at Donington and Jed took advantage of a track day there on the Thursday before to concentrate on getting used to the circuit and getting some suspension set-up.

Kevin and Jed worked hard all Thursday and came away with some good lap times. They were confident that we would have a good chance in the race.

Race Day

Race day on Saturday was warm and dry and good conditions for racing. Jed didn't disappoint, qualifying 2nd in the Powerbike race and 1st in the L&J Open.

The race results were 4th in the L&J Open and a stonking win in the Powerbikes. This result leaves Jed leading the Powerbikes by 9 points and second in the overall club championship.

Roll on Cadwell on the 7th May.

Cadwell Park - 6 and 7 May 2006 - Non-Championship Races and Round 4

Cadwell Park saw a new format for NG RoadRacing, with Saturday hosting Round 2 of the 2006 ACU Star Championship and Round 2 of the 2006 ACU/FSRA Super F2 Sidecar Championship as well as four NG non-championship club races, where for the first time grids were determined by timed qualifying.

Saturday morning started off dry and Jed qualified 5th with a time of 1:39.60 in the Grantham Honda Open, 1.4 seconds off pole, whch put him on the second row of the grid. Jed's race was the last of the day and very wet. He got a good start and went into third behind Joe Symonds. Luckily or unluckily, Joe fell off on the second lap in atrocious conditions and Jed moved into second and then took the lead from Andrew Bennett taking the chequered flag in first place.

Sunday was back to the normal format. The weather had'nt changed and it was to be wet nearly all day. The first Open qualifier saw Jed start from the back of the grid, having been penalised for a late entry (he won't do that again!), but riding strongly to end up 2nd and in the first row on the grid for the Race.

Qualifying for the Powerbikes was the same story with Jed once again starting from the back of the grid and qualifying in fourth this time. Both races took place later on Sunday afternoon and saw Jed return 2nd in the Open and a fantastic 1st in the Powerbikes. This puts him 34 points ahead of second place Jeff White on 52 points in the Powerbike Championship, and only 1 point behind Steve Lake in the Open.

Not a bad weekend's work at all and now it's off to Pembrey for Rounds 5 and 6.

Pembrey - 20 and 21 May 2006 - Rounds 5 and 6

Well off to Pembrey for Rounds 5 and 6, unfortunately with a skeleton support team for Jed as the other half of the Team were at Mondello Park, Ireland for the British Superbike meeting -- which as it happens was cancelled because of the severe weather.

Saturday and Jed's first race was the L & J Mechanical Services Open Race. Jed had qualified for the front row on the grid and with only 1 point separating Championship Leader Steve Lake from Jed this was always going to be a hard fought race. Rod Lynn took the lead from the start but hard charging Steve Lake soon took the lead from Lynn with Jed left in third place just in front of Gary Teague.

Next Race for Jed was the Phoenix Yamaha Powerbikes and Jed, who was leading this championship, had qualified 2nd which again put him front row on the Grid. Steve Lake again made a good start with Rod Lynn in close attendance and Jed in an equally close third place. By lap two Jed was in a strong positon to overtake Lynn at Brooklands but just clipped Lynn's rear tyre while making the manoevre and went down. Luckily there was no damage to himself and little to the bike, but obviously he lost valuable points.

The first race for Jed on Sunday was again the L & J Mechancal Services Open and after Saturday's crash Jed's bike was turned out in the spare fairings which obviously are not as aerodynamic as the last set. Jed managing 2nd row on the grid and finishing the race in 5th place. The Team was ordered to polish Jed's fairings and helmet for the Powerbike final, and this obviously did the trick with Jed qualifying 2nd and finishing the race in 3rd place.

Another overall successful weekend for Jed and STP with Jed still leading the Phoenix Yamaha Powerbike Championship, second in the L & J Mechanical Services Open Championship and 4th in the overall NG Roadracing Club Championship.

Our next race with NG Roadracing is on 24/25th of June at Brands Hatch.

Silverstone - 8 July 2006 - Round 9

We went to Silverstone on Friday for a trackday and to set the bike up for Jed's two races on the Saturday. On Friday morning everything seemed ok with Jed putting in some good lap times, albeit with the bike moving around more than we would have liked on the fast uneven corners.

In the afternoon it started to rain and we decided not to risk going out until the rain had stopped as Silverstone can get very slippery. Jed did go out later in the day when the track had dried up a bit, but he still had the same handling problems, although Kevin had altered quite a bit on the suspension side. Jed even had his first off for a long time: as he entered the garage he pulled on the front brake and ended up with the bike on top of him. Slightly embarrassing for Jed but very funny for all who saw it. Luckily no damage was done (apart from his ego) and the bike was prepared for Saturday's Race.

On Saturday, Jed won both qualifying races, and this put him on the front row for both finals. However the handling problems were still there but the bike was left as it was for the first final which was the L & J Open. Jed finished third behind Damien Fricker, a Superstock Cup rider, and Michael Howarth aboard the MAR ZX10 Superbike. Michael was there just to set up his new Superbike and although he won the race, he was not eligible for any championship points, so Jed picked up the points for second place.

Still unhappy with the bike's handling, it was decided to soften off the rear a bit. This was a gamble, but turned out to be worth it as Jed finished second in the Powerbike race, behind Michael Howarth who again was not eligible for points so Jed picked up another 25. This puts Jed 58 points clear of second place rider Rod Lynn in the Powerbike Championship and 18 points clear in the Open.

So a pretty good weekend, with Jed extending his lead in both Championships. He now has a month off before his next race at Darley Moor which is on the 12th/13th of August.

Darley Moor - 12 and 13 August 2006 - Rounds 10 and 11

Another great weekend for STP Racing with Jed winning five out of eight races. He won all the qualifying races and would have been second in all the other races except for a momentary lack of concentration that saw him taking to the grass on two occasions in Sunday's Open race, leaving him coming home in a not too disappointing seventh place.

Justin was denied the other three wins by two local "Darley Specialists", Steve Tomes #301 and Richard Eglin #288, whose knowledge of the track saw them just pip Justin to the post leaving all other NG regulars in their wake.

So, a fantastic result that leaves Justin 70 points clear from Rod Lynn #199 in the Powerbikes, 30 points ahead of Gary Teague #8 in the Open and 3rd in the overall club championship.

Our next NG race is at Pembrey on the 2/3rd of September, where Justin will be looking again to increase his lead in the two championships.

Pembrey - 2 and 3 September 2006 - Rounds 12 and 13

Jed went to Pembrey leading both the Powerbike and the Open Championships, so the weekend was always going to be about getting top five placings and consolidating his lead.

On Saturday the weather was very changeable with a few rain showers thrown in for good measure. This made tyre choice difficult. Jed's first race of the day was the Open Qualifier, with rain and a very wet track. Jed took it easy and qualified 4th with Gary Teague #8 taking Pole. The Open final later in the afternoon saw overcast skies and a drying track, and Jed took advantage of this and pushed hard to finish second behind Gary Teague #8. Unfortunately this reduced Jed's lead by 5 points.

The Powerbike qualifier also took place on a wet track, and Jed finished a comfortable third with Gary Teague #8 again getting Pole position. The Powerbike final was one of the last races of the day and the track was drying. Jed only needed a few points to clinch the Powerbike Championship so it was a nail biting race, hoping that he wouldn't make a mistake. Jed finished third behind young Charlie Bishop #3 and yet again the race winner was Gary Teague. But it was enough to give Jed the Powerbike title and another excuse for a party, not that we really needed one.

So with the pressure off on the powerbike title it was important to concentrate on the open and try to hold off Gary Teague from getting any nearer Jed in the Open Championship. But with Gary racing so well at Pembrey it was difficult to see Jed beating him, but a second place would keep the title alive.

Phil Bevan #13 entered Sunday's Open and Powerbike races wanting to get back his race pace after missing the last two BSB rounds due to work commitments.

The first race of the day for Jed was again the Open qualifier. The weather was overcast but dry, and Jed was determined to get a good result. He led all the way from start to finish with Phil, who had to start at the back of the grid, finishing in a very respectable 6th place.

The Open final was not to be so easy with Gary Teague again taking the lead and opeing up a big gap. Jed was in second place for most of the race, except for a few laps when Phil managed to sneak by but Jed was able to retake second with a few laps left.

The powerbike qualifying race was a formality for Jed, but he still qualified 3rd with Phil again starting from the back of the grid and coming over the line in 8th place.

The Powerbike final saw Jed finish 3rd and Phil not far behind in 5th place.

So all in all, a great weekend for Jed and STP, winning our first Championship. Many thanks to our Mechanic Kev for all the hard work that has certainly paid off this season.

Jed goes to the last round at Thruxton in five weeks time with 253 points in the Powerbike Championsip from Gary Teague with 190, but just 16 points ahead of Gary in the Open. Jed still has some work to do to take the Open Championship, so watch this space.

Thruxton - 7 October 2006 - Round 14

So off to the incredibly fast Thruxton Circuit for the final NG Roadracing round of 2006. Jed had already secured the Phoenix Powerbike Championship and needed only a few points to clinch the L & J Mechanical Services Open Championship and "do the double".

We all arrived at Thruxton Thursday evening and set up camp. The whole team was there and Vic and Luke turned up to support Jed and Phil. Phil was entered for both the Powerbike and Open races, and after a disappointing last race at the Brands Hatch BSB Superstock meeting had a few points to prove. Unfortunately Phil had to start at the back of the grid for both of Saturday's qualifying sessions so it was always going to be a hard job to get through to the front.

First off on Saturday was the Open Qualifier and because of such a full grid there were two heats. Jed won his and Phil finshed 5th, starting from the back of the grid. The Powerbike qualifier saw Jed finish first and Phil 3rd, a fantastic effort from Phil.

The first race of the afternoon was the Open and with Jed on the first row and Phil on the second it was going to be an interesting race. Jed had to finish in at least 6th place to take the title. Gary Teaque, Jed's closest rival, was riding really well but needed to win to have any chance of snatching the title from him.

Jed rode a very mature race and settled for a very comfortable 4th place. Phil on the other hand rode a fantastic race taking the lead after a couple of laps and leading to the finish line.

A fantastic win for Phil and another tiltle for Jed.

The Powerbike final later in the afternoon was very excitng. With Jed already holding the 2006 title he had nothing to prove, but he put on a spectacular display of the riding that had won him the title with a wheel to wheel race with last year's title holder Joe Symonds. Jed evetually took the win from Joe, and Phil came in third place.

The HM Plant Honda Team had been testing at Thruxton with Karl Harris and Ryuichi Kiyonari, together with a new signing Jonathan Rea. Kiyo stayed for the evening presentation and presented the trophies. However Kiyo had already presented Jed with a bottle of Champagne after his powerbike win, so a very big thankyou from all the STP Team to Ryuichi Kiyonari and HM Plant Team boss Neil Tuxworth, for making possible such a memorable end to our NG Roadracing season.

Needless to say we had one hell of a party on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, with over forty people in our awning at one time so people tell me!

Jed would just like to apologise to Steve King (Kingy) for doing his victory donut in front of kingy's new XK8 and covering the car in molten rubber. OOPS!
